What You’ll Love About This Recipe

  • No Oven Required: Everything is assembled cold, so there is nothing to bake or heat.
  • Ready in 15 Minutes: You can build a full tray faster than most appetizers come together.
  • Easy to Scale and Customize: Repeat the layers for a crowd, and change the meat, cheese, dressing, or toppings to suit the occasion.

Ingredient Notes

Slider Rolls: Pepperidge Farm rolls hold up well without getting soggy, but any soft slider or dinner roll works.

Salami: Columbus Italian dry salami has a sharper, traditional deli flavor. Use a milder salami if you prefer less spice.

Deli Ham: Ask for thin slices at the deli counter so the ham layers easily without overpowering the other ingredients.

Havarti Cheese: Havarti layers well, while provolone or mozzarella make good substitutes.

Submarine Dressing: Bottled sub shop-style dressing gives the sliders classic deli flavor. Add it just before serving to prevent soggy rolls.

Lettuce and Tomato: Slice the tomato just before assembly so it does not release extra moisture into the bread.

Recipe Variations

Make It Spicy or Add Vegetables: Add banana peppers, roasted red peppers, or red pepper flakes for extra flavor and crunch.

Swap the Protein or Cheese: Use pepperoni or capicola instead of salami, or replace the Havarti with provolone or mozzarella.

Make It Low-Carb or Full-Size: Serve the fillings over lettuce without a roll, or build the same layers on a full-size hoagie roll for a heartier sandwich.

Recipe Tips and Tricks

Assemble the sliders close to serving time so the dressing and tomatoes do not make the bread soggy.

Keep the deli meat cold until assembly, especially when the tray will sit out at a party. Cut the cheese to fit inside the rolls.

For a large batch, set up an assembly line and repeat each layer across every roll before moving to the next ingredient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these ahead of time?

You can prepare the ingredients ahead, but assemble the sliders within an hour or two of serving so the rolls stay fresh.

Can I use a different type of bread?

Yes. Any soft slider roll or small dinner roll works in place of the Pepperidge Farm rolls.

Do I have to use submarine dressing?

No. Mayonnaise or a simple vinegar-and-oil mixture both work well in place of the bottled dressing.
